New MA state Laws for Preventing Identity Theft from Businesses
Due to the identity theft of five years ago from two Marshall stores in Miami, Massachusetts businesses will now be required to follow new state rules to prevent this. The regulations will take effect on March 1st and will ideally make it more difficult for hackers to access customer and employee information. These new rules will affect the vast majority of businesses in MA including those that collect or store customer or employee information that is of a personal nature such as a name combined with either a Social Security number, bank account number, or credit/debit account numbers; such sensitive data is required to be encrypted for laptops, portable USB drives, cell phones, and PDAs come March of 2010.
