“Beige Book” Report for New England reveals signs of Improvement

March 5th, 2010 perdisatt Posted in South Shore MA business news No Comments »

A recent assessment of New England’s economy revealed somewhat promising results.  The researchers for the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston’s latest “Beige Book”  report showed that pay cuts were being restored, 401(k) matches are coming back, and companies are optimistically busy making expansion plans.  This forward movement of the New England economy is in sharp contrast to last year’s Beige Book report.  It is uncertain whether the economic trends revealing themselves this early in the year will continue, but many manufacturers have reported a strengthened demand for products and software and information technology companies have generally reported solid growth so far in 2010.

New MA state Laws for Preventing Identity Theft from Businesses

November 27th, 2009 perdisatt Posted in South Shore MA business news Comments Off

Due to the identity theft of five years ago from two Marshall stores in Miami, Massachusetts businesses will now be required to follow new state rules to prevent this.  The regulations will take effect on March 1st and will ideally make it more difficult for hackers to access customer and employee information.  These new rules will affect the vast majority of businesses in MA including those that collect or store customer or employee information that is of a personal nature such as a name combined with either a Social Security number, bank account number, or credit/debit account numbers; such sensitive data is required to be encrypted for laptops, portable USB drives, cell phones, and PDAs come March of 2010.

Get the Right Cell Phone Plan for your South Shore Business

When it comes to prepaid cell phone services, Sprint Nextel’s Boost Mobile division’s decision to launch a $50 a month plan for unlimited calls and texting has been winning over customers in Massachusetts.  MetroPCS, which is Boost’s biggest rival in the Boston MA area, has reported a net gain of about 66,000 new subscribers which is considerably less than its second quarter report of nearly 206,000; Boost, on the other hand, is seeing a small drop from 777,000 in the second quarter to 666,000 for the third quarter, but this is still ten times the net gain of its rival MetroPCS.  The success of Sprint’s Boost with Massachusetts customers may be due to their focus on having a prepaid service which is preferred over being chained to a long-term contract.

November 6th, 2009 perdisatt Posted in South Shore MA business news Comments Off

In a move that is expect to help Braintree MA’s New England Office Supply Inc (NEOS) expand their market, NEOS has made a deal to buy Old Colony Stationery Inc; this merger will strengthen the company’s printing business and expand it to Central and Western Massachusetts.
For years, NEOS and Old Colony have been friendly competitors and through recent discussions between the two companies, the merger agreement was set forth in order to help both companies to flourish.  With this purchase, NEOS will acquire a key distribution hub in Central MA in the form of a 19,000 sq ft location.  Also beneficial for NEOS is the ability to now handle printing requests in-house with the three printing presses Old Colony utilized for their business instead of having to outsource these jobs.
