Energy-Efficient Construction in Quincy MA

July 17th, 2010 perdisatt Posted in South Shore MA business news, community No Comments »

With the idea of emphasizing energy-efficient construction, Quincy MA will hold two public hearings about new home construction standards.  These forums will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday at 6:30, with the first meeting focusing on the code’s requirements for commercial construction and the second meeting about residential construction requirements.
Just some of the energy-efficient requirements include thicker insulation and heating systems that use less oil; builders would also be required to hire an energy rater to measure the amount of air that can escape from a building as well as the quality of duct work.

Magellan Jets of Braintree MA Offer Easier Way to Find Discounted Charter Flights

July 9th, 2010 perdisatt Posted in South Shore MA business news, luxury No Comments »

The Braintree, MA firm Magellan Jets has recently set forth a database that is accessible by the public via their website.  This service allows users to quickly locate private jet trips with only the crew on board (or “empty legs”); these trips may occur when a private jet service takes passengers for a one-way flight or when the return trip would make it necessary for the plane to be stationed in a particular airport for more than a week’s time.  In any of these situations, private jet companies are usually willing to offer discounts on these flights and thus make them more desirable to customers.

Magellan Jets has made it possible for customers looking for a private jet service to more easily find available flights with a real-time search.  Magellan Jet indicated that about half of their chartered flights are business trips, with the other half being for leisure.

Rezoning for Residential Property by the Granite Plaza, Future development in mind

May 14th, 2010 perdisatt Posted in South Shore MA business news Comments Off

The recent decision was unanimous to endorse the proposal to rezone a house surrounded by the Granite Plaza shopping center.  The planning board in Braintree MA has approved this rezoning in order to allow future development.  This ‘island’ of residential property that was surrounded by the shopping center will make a difference in revitalizing the mall, with a possible prospective tenant that wants to serve the local needs.  There is, however, some opposition from businesses that feel there is traffic congestion at the shopping center already.

The final decision will go to the town council next, and any redevelopment plans for the shopping center would still need planning board approval.

Cape Wind Project Meets with Obstacles

April 30th, 2010 perdisatt Posted in South Shore MA business news Comments Off

Construction on the Cape Wind project, a 130 turbine wind farm in Nantucket Sound, may start by the end of this year if all goes according to plans.  The President of Cape Wind Associates, Jim Gordon, hopes to have the wind farm completed by the end of 2012, but also realizes that there are a lot of obstacles in the way, one of which is receiving federal approval for the nation’s first utility-scale offshore wind farm.   Plans for Cape Wind’s operation include the sale of their electricity to utility companies which would purchase the power for use by customers.  Negotiations with National Grid for a long-term contract is still in the works.

“Beige Book” Report for New England reveals signs of Improvement

March 5th, 2010 perdisatt Posted in South Shore MA business news Comments Off

A recent assessment of New England’s economy revealed somewhat promising results.  The researchers for the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston’s latest “Beige Book”  report showed that pay cuts were being restored, 401(k) matches are coming back, and companies are optimistically busy making expansion plans.  This forward movement of the New England economy is in sharp contrast to last year’s Beige Book report.  It is uncertain whether the economic trends revealing themselves this early in the year will continue, but many manufacturers have reported a strengthened demand for products and software and information technology companies have generally reported solid growth so far in 2010.

February 26th, 2010 cphillips Posted in South Shore MA business news Comments Off

A new Chief Transformation Officer was hired to help assist Quincy’s hospital in how to optimally use their resources.  The Quincy Medical Center is facing a $4.5 million deficit this year and have hired Paul Angelico to be the Chief Transformation Officer in an effort to implement savings and design plans that will enhance revenue.  Angelico has experience when it comes to successful management of resources, as he founded a oleochemical and biofuel manufacturing company in Quincy in 1994.   Part of Angelico’s plan for success involves reducing bureaucracy by cutting management positions so that decision-making is given more to the employees who have a working understanding of the needs of the public, and forming a new clinical afflation with South Shore Hospital in Weymouth.  Quincy Medical Center is optimistic about the future of new and beneficial changes.
